Activities

The region is famous for its vast, centuries-old olive groves that stretch all the way down to the shoreline. The dirt paths cutting through these silver-green trees are ideal for a relaxed late-afternoon walk or a bicycle ride.

Nies (the ancient plural form of the Greek word for ship, naus) and the nearby Sourpi region in Southwestern Magnesia are a hidden paradise. This area is perfect for those seeking a tranquil vacation, an authentic Greek experience, and raw natural beauty away from mass tourism. According to Greek mythology, this is the very bay where Achilles and his fleet set sail for Troy!

1. Beach & Sea Activities

Here is what you can see and do in Nies and its surroundings:

  • Swim in the Calm Bay: The main beach of Nies (also known as Metochi) is located in a deep, naturally protected gulf. It features a mix of sand and pebbles with crystal-clear, shallow, and incredibly calm waters, making it an absolute paradise for families with children.
  • Stand-Up Paddling (SUP) & Kayaking: Because the bay is completely shielded from strong winds and waves, it is the perfect spot to launch a SUP or kayak. You can easily paddle along the coastline to explore small, rugged sea caves and secluded mini-beaches.
  • Dive into Underwater Museums (Amaliapoli): Just a short drive away (about 7-8 km) in Amaliapoli (Mitiela), there are accessible underwater archaeological sites. If you love scuba diving, you can visit ancient shipwrecks at Cape Glaros (at a depth of 15-22 meters), Kikinthos Island, or Telegrafos Bay.

2. Historical & Cultural Sightseeing

  • The Metochi of Xenia Monastery: On the small peninsula of Nies, you will find the old Metochi (dependency) of the Panagia Xenia Monastery. It is a designated modern heritage site featuring two-story stone buildings and warehouses where monks used to harvest and process olives. Nearby, you will also see two historic pre-industrial olive presses and the ruins of the Byzantine church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity).
  • Kato Xenia Monastery & “Golgotha” Hill: Located just outside the town of Sourpi, this historic, active monastery is highly worth a visit. About 500 meters south of the monastery sits the hill of “Golgotha” (or the Hill of the Virgin Mary). Three large wooden crosses stand at the top, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the entire valley below.
  • Sourpi Folklore Museum: Housed in a beautifully restored old warehouse in the town of Sourpi (5 km from Nies), this small museum is a great stop to learn about the traditional daily life, agricultural tools, and local customs of the past centuries.
